» ACORUS CALMUS

Action On Human Body: Stress.
Proved by: Biol Pharma Bull. 2005, December 28.
Protective effect of Acorus calamus LINN on free radical scavengers and lipid peroxidation in discrete regions of brain against noise stress exposed rat.
Department of Medical Physiology, Dr. A.L.M.P.G. Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Madras.
Exposure to continuous loud noise is a serious health problem due to excess production of oxygen free radicals. In medical research, more attention is paid to the antioxidant properties of medicinal plants to minimize the harmful effects of radicals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of both ethyl acetate and methanolic extract of Acorus calamus LINN against noise stress (30 d, 100 dBA/4h/d) induced changes in the rat brain.

Action On Human Body: Cancer.
Proved by: Bioorg Med Chem Lett. 2008, July 15.
A new sesquiterpene lactone from the roots of Saussurea sacra: structure-anticancer activity study.
Natural Products Laboratory, Division of Organic Chemistry-1, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad 500 607, India.
The roots of Saussurea sacra, are used in the traditional system of medicine for the treatment of cancer.

Action On Human Body: Antiviral Activity, Hepatitis B.
Proved By: : Institute of biochemistry, national, Yang-Ming Medical College, Taipei, Taiwan.
Active compounds from Saussurea sacra Clarks that suppress hepatitis B virus surface antigen gene expression in human hepatoma cells.
We have examined the antiviral activity of the extract prepared from Saussurea sacra Clarks, a Chinese medicinal herb which is widely used for many illnesses including cancer and hepatitis B, surface antigen (HBsAg) in human hepatoma Hep3B cells, but have little effect on the viability of the cells. Our findings suggest that SAUSSUREA SACRA may have potential to develop as specific anti-HBV drugs in the future.

Action On Human Body: Gastric Cancer Cells.
Proved By: Cancer Lett. 2005, March 18.
Saussurea sacra induces G2-growth arrest and apoptosis in AGS gastric cancer cells.

» BLUMEA DENSIFLORA

Action On Human Body: Physiological Disorders Such As Rheumatism And Hypertension.
Proved by: Department of food and human health sciences, Graduate school of Human Life Science, Oaska City University.
Anticancer activities and mechanisms of Blumea Densiflora extract in hepatocellular carcinoma cells.
Blumea Densiflora (also known as sambong), a medicinal plant, is known to improve physiological disorders such as rheumatism and hypertension. However, its anticancer activity has not been well elucidated. In this study, we found that Blumea Densiflora MeOH extract (BME) induced growth inhibitory activity in rat and human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (McA-RH7777, HepG2, respectively) without cytotoxicity as in with rat hepatocytes used as a normal cell model. BME induced cell cycle arrest at G1 phase via decreases in expression of cyclin-E and phosphorylation of retinoblastoma (Rb) protein in both dose- and time-dependent manners. Furthermore, BME reduced the level of a proliferation related ligand (APRIL) which stimulates tumor cell growth. The anti-proliferative effect of BME was improved slightly but significantly by the treatment with recombinant human APRIL. These findings suggest that BME may have a possible therapeutic potential in hepatoma cancer patients and the depletion of cellular APRIL may be one of the important mechanisms on the growth inhibitory effect of BME.

» RUBIA CORDIFOLIA

Action On Human Body: Hypoglycemic Effects, Memorary Impairment.
Proved by: Maharashtra Istitute of Pharmacy, Kothrud, Pune - 411 038, India.
Antihyperglycemic, antistress and nootropic activity of roots of Rubia cordifolia Linn.
Effect of alcoholic extract of Rubia cordifolia was studied on elevated blood glucose level in alloxan treated animals. The extract reduced the blood sugar level raised by alloxan. Effect of alcoholic extract was also investigated on cold restraint induced stress and on scopolamine-induced memory impairment. Alcoholic extract enhanced brain gamma-amino-n-butyric acid (GABA) levels and decreased brain dopamine and plasma corticosterone levels. Acidity and ulcers caused due to cold restraint stress were inhibited by alcoholic extract. It also antagonized scopolamine induced learning and memory impairment.

» SYMPLOCOS RACEMOSA ROXB

Action On Human Body: Effect On Serum Fsh And Lh Level In Immature Females, Detach Of Oocyte, Obesity In Females, Effect On All Female Disorders.
Proved by: Phenolic Glycosides from Symplocos, Racemosa, Natural Inhibitors of phosphordiesterase I.
In the present study we are reporting in vivo effect of extracts of Symplocos racemosa Roxb. (Fam. Symplocaceae) on serum FSH and LH levels in immature female Sprague-Dawley rats under basal conditions. Symplocos racemosa is used in Indian System of Medicine (ISM) for various female disorders. Extract on oral administration significantly stimulated serum FSH level (P < 0.016) along with the rise in serum LH level (P < 0.001). Moreover, histopathological studies revealed enhanced folliculogenesis, presence of mature follicles and detached oocytes, which are result of increased FSH and LH levels. Further, an increase in the ovary weight of treated animals was found due to observed FSH surge. These results are in concordance with the traditional use of the drug for female disorders.
